How to make a Grilled Charlie
written by Cooper on January 31st, 2008 under Charlieisms

Have you ever wanted to be Charlie? Nope, neither have we. BUT, have you ever wanted to eat like Charlie. Absolutely not, that is repulsive, right? While, in case you’re not the sharpest crayon in the box, I have decoded the the directions for making Charlie’s very own: Grilled Charlie.
It’s key to remember this when making it -
A Grilled Charlie has peanut butter LAST!
Peanut butter outside, chocolate inside. Butter inside, cheese outside!”
While exact amounts aren’t discussed, I’ll give you the low down what you’ll need:
Ingredient list
2 slices bread (absolutely not homemade!)
Chocolate sauce
Butter
Cheese (Cheddar or American)
Peanut butter
Strap on your bike helmet, nope that’s backwards champ, and let’s begin.
Instructions
First things first, you’re gonna fire up a pan on medium heat, and while that’s heating we’ll put the sandwich together.
With your two pieces of bread out, generously squirt some chocolate sauce on one side and butter up the other. Put the pieces of bread together, chocolate/butter sides in towards each other. On the outside of both sides lay some cheese and top with peanut butter. Throw it on the pan, flip, and consume. Best if eaten with ill fitting sweat pants.
Did you actually make one? Post it up in the comments bitch!
PS. If you haven’t seen this episode, it’s from Season 2 Episode 2 - The Gang Goes Jihad. Which you can download from Amazon.com for under 2 bucks!
Update: Woops! I had said this was Season 3 Episode 6, but it’s really Season 2 Episode 2.

I haven’t seen that episode yet! I’ll have to see if I can find it, it sounds funny.
The grilled Charlie thing sounds absolutely horribly disgusting though. i’ll wait for someone else to try it first, haha.
Butter on the inside sounds gross. I think the only way to actually make it work would be to dip it in batter and fry it.
Very good instructions… I plan on making it on Super Bowl Sunday!!!!!
@Chris, well dipping and frying will make anything taste good. and yeah, for the first time ever (perhaps), butter does sound gross.
@sobersoul, well if you do, be sure to snap some pictures, and let me know!
This is not the correct way to make a grilled Charlie at all. The quote, from the horse’s mouth, is,
“A Grilled Charlie has peanut butter LAST!
Peanut butter outside, chocolate inside. Butter inside, cheese outside!”
Using the quote exactly for a ’sandwich blueprint’ if you will, would look as follows: Cheese -> Bread -> Butter -> Chocolate -> Bread -> Peanut Butter. To properly make a grilled Charlie:
1) Butter one side of a piece of bread to hell and back. Put the bread butter-side down on a frying pan which has also been endowed with copious amounts of butter.
2) While frying, place cheese (1 slice) on the bread. as the cheese melts flip the bread and fry the cheese (NOTE: take care as to not let the cheese stick to the pan…Should not be a problem if the correct (and absurdly disgusting) amount of butter is applied). Remove bread from pan.
3) Making sure there is still plenty of butter in pan, place second piece of bread in pan. While frying, add decidedly more than a drizzle of chocolate syrup (Hershey’s) to the top of bread and proceed to flip. Quickly (as to avoid burning) fry chocolate. Remove from pan.
4) Construct sandwich by placing bread together, cheese on the outside, and butter and chocolate on the inside. Spread thin layer of peanut butter on the previously unadorned side. Enjoy.
I have made and consumed a grilled charlie, and let me tell you, if made according to Mr. Kelley’s description, it is quite delicious, although, I felt extremely dirty while and after eating, so exercise extreme caution
I just ate a grilled charlie and it tasted great! I thought that the cheese would be a little weird, but it ended up making the sandwich taste good. Altogether, I was very impressed the grilled charlie and will be making more soon.
I made my own sandwich called the “Sweet D.”
You will need nutella chocolate hazlenut spread, peanut butter, butter, marshmellow cream, powdered sugar, honey
Butter 2 slices of bread on one side
Peanut Butter generously over one piece and place on the inside of one of the pieces of buttered bread. Then Take another piece of bread and spread nutella on one side and marshmellow cream on the other. Place doublesided piece of bread inbetween the sandwich so both buttered sides are facing outward. Heat on medium for about 1 minute each side until both sides are perfectly crisp. Place sandwich on plate and garnish with powdered sugar and honey.
This will probably put you into a diabetic coma but the Sweet D is a sweet treat.
How are you suppose to grill something with peanut butter on the outside?
This shit sounds like something Elvis used to eat… right before [probably right when] he croaked on his toilet. Fantastic stuff, I’m thinking of making this tonight for dinner. The best part of this is my girlfriend is also on board for this, but I think she’ll chicken out and eat a grilled cheese instead. Can’t wait for Season 4. In the mean time, I’ll keep procrastinating and watch Season 3 over and over on hulu.com.
